When you’re starting out as a guitar maker, custom commissions don’t make money because the amount of hours you put in to each one vastly exceeds what you can charge for. But it is a profitable activity in so many other ways: not only does it convert down-time into valuable learning and hands-on experience, but you can usually recoup what you spent on materials and – if the customers (and your friends on social media) like what they see – you start to get some exposure too. Best of all, the satisfaction of delivering something unique and personal is hard to beat. It’s so much more tangible than anything I ever did in the world of corporate work.

With the move to a new workshop (Winter 2020) I hope to be able to take a big step up in productivity and creativity when it comes to custom builds. I’m looking forward to making guitars more consistently and more efficiently than I’ve been able to so far – and that will be good for customers’ experience and for my profitability!
